Easy Ways to Maintain Our Zest for Life(and Keep Up with the Times)

Our bodies work hard throughout our lives, and once we pass sixty, we naturally begin to notice things slowing down a bit. In the West, we often conflate aging with stopping—assuming that getting older means staying sedentary. But as the old adage goes, "If you don't use it, you lose it." Motion is essential.

Maintaining your vitality doesn't mean you have to run marathons or climb mountains (unless that’s your passion!). It simply means choosing to stay engaged, active, and curious. Aging is not an affliction; it is an adventure.

Here are eight essential practices to help keep your light burning bright in the last third of life.

1. Keep the Body in Motion

Physical movement is the foundation of thriving as we age. Find movement that brings you joy—whether that is daily walking, Tai Chi, Qigong, yoga, swimming, or dancing. The goal isn't extreme output; it’s continuous, intentional movement that honors your body while keeping you strong and flexible.

2. Embrace Change & Step Into the Present

Life is constantly shifting, and so are we. Resisting change drains our energy, while embracing it frees us. When we stop fighting the arrival of the new and instead look for the blessings within it, we step fully into the present moment with a positive, integrated mindset.

3. Challenge Your Mind with New Skills

Pushing ourselves mentally keeps us sharp, focused, and deeply involved in the world. Whether it's learning a complex new system, tackling a fresh discipline, or taking on a surprising challenge, we are never too old to learn. You might just amaze yourself with your own tenacity.

4. Connect with Your Tribe

Solitude offers rich gifts, and as solo elders, learning to cherish our own company is essential. Yet, sharing our lives with others feeds the soul in a way nothing else can. Turning our focus outward to care for and connect with our community helps us grow while contributing something vital to the world around us. "We live in complex times, but as elders, we can lead the way by focusing on the light rather than the fear."

5. Feed Your Soul with Pure Passion

Take the time to follow what brings you genuine delight—be it poetry, music, gardening, or walking in nature. After a lifetime of managing heavy responsibilities and caring for others, now is the time to deliberately fill your emotional tank with enriching, soul-singing activities.

6. Cultivate Lightness and Joy

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of the world if we let it keep us up at night. As elders, we have the unique opportunity to bring lightness where there is heaviness and division. Laugh often, seek out the good in people, and when the world feels too loud, step back for a quiet walk or a soothing cup of tea.

7. Become Your Own Calm Port in a Storm

Learn the art of self-soothing. When anxiety or an overactive mind strikes, create gentle rituals to anchor yourself.

  • Evening Foot Soak: Try putting on soft music and soaking your feet in warm water for ten minutes while sipping herbal tea or warm turmeric milk.

  • Breathwork: Practice gentle box breathing as you lie in bed to signal to your nervous system that it is safe to rest.

8. Nourish from the Inside Out

The simplest habits often yield the deepest results:

  • Hydrate Consistently: Our sense of thirst naturally diminishes as we age, making

intentional water intake vital for brain function and energy.

  • Choose Nutritious Foods: Fuel your body with vibrant, wholesome foods that sustain your daily stamina.

  • Journal Daily: Write to clear the mental clutter, track your inner growth, and stay

connected to your truth.
